I hear there’s good property opportunities in Florida. Oh wait, a 5-10 foot sea level rise means that… most urban areas in Florida are disappeared.

That right there is why the GOP doesn’t believe in global warming and climate change.

They think they win because they don’t have to worry about what happens to the urban and coastal areas when they get swamped, even though that’s where majority of Americans live, the bulk of American wealth is concentrated, and economic output is concentrated.

They also ignore the costs that aren’t directly visible by the lost ports and infrastructure. There’s a reason that ports like NY, Philly, Baltimore, Miami, Norfolk, etc., are where they are - natural ports and deep water with access to infrastructure. Sea level rise throws all that away and means we have to address where/how imports/exports arrive and get distributed.

So election law scholar who said something really damned stupid on Slate last week has a new column up.

He doubles down on stupid:

I wrote in an earlier Slate piece that it is dangerous rhetoric to claim the Georgia election was “stolen,” because such language undermines confidence in the fairness of the election process and because it takes the focus away from the dignity of each voter. This lawsuit strikes the right balance, by bringing the focus back to each voter.

I disagree.

He gets butthurt and hilarity ensues.

I wrote to Hasen at length:

I realize I am habitually combative and have sharp elbows on twitter. I make no apologies for that. The exchange last night may have been sharper than I intended, although I stand by my overall take on your previous writing on Slate.

I firmly believe that an outside academic telling voters, particularly people of color with a centuries long history of suppression and oppression on how to characterize their own experience is ethnocentric hubris. Your statement:

I wrote in an earlier Slate piece that it is dangerous rhetoric to claim the Georgia election was “stolen,” because such language undermines confidence in the fairness of the election process and because it takes the focus away from the dignity of each voter.

This flies in the face of documented evidence that the race had already been undermined by the very people charged with protecting electoral integrity and badly misplaces blame. The dignity of the voters was effectively stolen by the process: multi hour waits in line, suppressed registrations, mass role purges and so on. These actions were aimed quite specifically at people of color. You flip the burden onto the complainants to uphold a dignity that was already missing in action from official actions designed specifically to take that dignity in the first place. To add insult to injury, you then tell people that a justifiable (in my view) characterization of the election as ‘stolen’ undermines confidence in the system. What exactly is the basis for confidence in the first place? Why should any Georgia voter have confidence in a system that was specifically gamed to keep voters from expressing their will?

In your writing, you provide no methodology for evaluating your claims made above. There is no means by which they can be tested. You provide no explanatory framework to allow even rudimentary common agreement on the term ‘stolen’. This effectively leaves every reader to use their own colloquial understanding and personal gauge for how some action may constitute a theft, and with which you have already informed them they are wrong. We have no basis upon which to contest your assertion because we never agreed on terminology to begin with. Essentially, as was made clear by one of your defenders on twitter, we are supposed to just acquiesce based on you academic pedigree even though you are not making an academic argument. You are offering pablum as panacea, and then revert to a self reverential appeal to authority to wave away critics.

He wrote back to tell me his work stands for itself and he doesn’t want to talk to me.

John Oliver pointed out that although 97 out of 100 scientists agree with global warming, they only get one guy for each side for a TV debate instead of getting one denialist and 33 opposing him…

another reason why the framing is a bad idea

and this is one of my peeves with the climate change and some other scientific discussions - i realize the idea is to simplify it down and talk in non-jargonese

- still the “97 out of 100” part is not helpful
- it makes it sound like a vote or a contest
(and we know how people tend to see those as us vs them)

- which then justifies the idea (hope!) that those 3 might just be right
- and if they could only convince the others to vote differently…..

You could go with Vince Vaughn.

But hey, if Tom Cruise could play Jack Reacher (who is 6’5” and 230+) anyone can play anyone.

That’s exactly who I would have in mind! Yes! Sam is perfect for Mueller. Sam’s got a bit of a Blue Blood, old money look to him but he’s also definitely the kind of guy who kicks ass and takes names too. I’d see Waterston’s Mueller as a more by the books and reserved Jack McCoy type.

I can’t pull up a map, but his district is really close to the one AOC will represent if I understand the descriptions in wikipedia correctly. I’m curious how he would be significantly different than her.

I think it’s just that he’s not Barbara Lee, someone who understandably has been popular with the left of the party for a long time but someone I’m not sure if that translates into leadership material.

I like Mann for it because Mann does noir-ish crime and paranoia really, really well. The Insider, Heat and Collateral come to mind.

I love the fact that the guy analyzing the debate style doesn’t actually get what Ben’s techniques actually are in many cases.

For example
1. In the pushing for specific example, Ben’s not actually pushing for specifics. He’s deliberately misrepresenting what institutional racism actually is because much of his audience is unfamiliar with it.
2. In the moving to concrete example, Ben just spouts a bunch of BS and goes warlords and 6 dollars a day. He’s not going concrete, he’s deliberately shifting the premise of the debate with a bit of handwaving BS followed up with standard, herp, herp, at least our poor aren’t as poor as the people in the 3rd world.
3. The guy narrating the video goes on at length about Ben’s research and sourcing. That’s BS. Ben pulls facts out of his ass and when challenged pulls the source out of his ass. The moon’s made out of blue cheese and white jelly beans. NASA says so.

Michael Avenatti is an arrogant, publicity hungry piece of shit who was more interested in personally running for President against Trump than serving Stormy Daniel’s best interests. He should serve as a cautionary example to every liberal who shallowly declared him a great candidate for 2020 because “he’s a street fighter.”

“For months I’ve asked Michael Avenatti to give me accounting information about the fund my supporters so generously donated to for my safety and legal defense. He has repeatedly ignored those requests. Days ago I demanded again, repeatedly, that he tell me how the money was being spent and how much was left. Instead of answering me, without my permission or even my knowledge Michael launched another crowdfunding campaign to raise money on my behalf. I learned about it on Twitter.

I haven’t decided yet what to do about legal representation moving forward. Michael has been a great advocate in many ways. I’m tremendously grateful to him for aggressively representing me in my fight to regain my voice. But in other ways Michael has not treated me with the respect and deference an attorney should show to a client. He has spoken on my behalf without my approval. He filed a defamation case against Donald Trump against my wishes. He repeatedly refused to tell me how my legal defense fund was being spent. Now he has launched a new crowdfunding campaign using my face and name without my permission and attributing words to me that I never wrote or said. I’m deeply grateful to my supporters and they deserve to know their money is being spent responsibly. I don’t want to hurt Michael, but it’s time to set the record straight. The truth has always been my greatest ally.

I see your point… however.

In some cases, using “male” or female” as an adjective — not a noun — is the best way to get a point across. For example, if Trump calls a reporter an “ugly dog” and I want to write a headline describing it succinctly, the fact that it’s a woman is important to get across.

And in a case like that, a headline like “Trump Calls Female Reporter ‘An Ugly Dog’” is pretty much the best way to do that, and I wouldn’t consider it dehumanizing. Other constructions are clumsy and wordy: “woman reporter,” “reporter who is a woman,” etc.

I’ve always thought of the terms “male” and “female” as adjectives.

re: #168 Charles Johnson

Using it as an adjective is fine. In fact, “female reporter” is the correct use because “reporter” is a non-gendered term and you want to clarify the circumstances. But saying, “those females over there won’t accept my advances” is a problem. Not just in the “female what?” sense of the statement, but again, it suggests that someone is less than a person.

The agreement posted online by the United States Trade Representative’s office on Oct.1 included language Canadian negotiators apparently never approved.

Officials say a “legal scrub” of the text continues.

Canada has not posted its official version of the agreement in either official language, leaving it unclear whether the USTR’s version will be the one the three countries actually sign in two days.

So far, Canada has been unsuccessful in persuading the Americans to lift U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports, despite the successful conclusion of negotiations to revise NAFTA earlier this fall.

Both Mexico and Canada wanted those tariffs lifted before the signing ceremony took place.

If Ari did anything he proved Corsi is a complete bullshitter on a national network. For those people that don’t know him and catch it, it might be valuable info to not ever take this lump of crap seriously.

Cheer Up Liberals, We Did a Lot Better in Mississippi Than You Think (Wonkette, the end of the article):

Perspective is key here. Too many liberals from other mothers attempt to write off the South. After Espy’s loss, there was a lot of the tired takes that “blue states should stop supporting racist red states.” This really offends me as a native Southerner, especially since states like Oregon or even Maine are just a Portland away from being another Mississippi. The Washington Post suggested that Hyde-Smith’s win proved “how solidly conservative the state is.” “Conservative” is yet another euphemism. They mean “white.” Across the Bible Belt, there’s a clear racial schism in how folks vote. Is it really as reductive as “liberal” vs. “conservative”? It’s not as if every black Southerner who reliably votes Democrat spends their weekends dancing in Pride parades or sipping Chardonnay at the opera.

People like Stacey Abrams and Mike Espy will be major figures in history, while Cindy Hyde-Smith will just be a footnote. This is a battle we’re winning. It’s slow-going and sometimes torturous, yes, but we’re making progress. We’re breaking through the seemingly impenetrable wall of voter suppression and assorted vestiges of Jim Crow.

I’m disappointed yet encouraged by the results. We started here in VA by electing two consecutive Dem governors, then unseated a Republican senator with presidential aspirations, and then Obama won here. We’ve only elected one gop governor since 2001 and I don’t see that pattern changing. Eventually bright red states will elect Dems.

the context is that Hillary KNEW it was Eric Holder and they misidentified him anyway and because “THEY” misidentified him, she tossed out that the “they all look alike” comment as if that would be the expected response from people that can’t bother to even pay attention to anything remotely like a detail, when her statement prior indicated the fallacy of the statement itself…

so instead of the dark humor that Hillary was sharing with POC and the idea that all black men look alike, the GOP naturally states that THIS is exactly what Ms. Clinton stated and implied… which takes it completely out of the context and tone from which the statement was made.

Down under we call if “preferential voting”. You have to vote with numbers 1,2,3 etc to specify your preference for each candidate. Been like that ever since I started voting - 1960s. We vote on paper & the counting really doesn’t take very long.

Even after a lengthy LOL break, it sounds like insanity ( or a cheap “Washington Intrigue” TV movie storyboard). The only problem is, in the Trump Era, I’m not so sure he’s all that delusional…

I strongly suspect that Mr Whitaker has realised that he has gotten himself into a bit a of a pickle, and that he needs to keep out of the way of the FBI unless he wants to find himself getting caught up in the prosecutions.

DFW broke it’s autumn - Sep.1 - Nov. 30 - record by mid October this year. It was seriously nuts, and the rain finally stopped being a regular part of the weather forecast after the election.

8.1 oxgang = 1 hide = about 120 acres or 1 family/year of land or 1 pound sterling in production. Humorously, to me anyway, the hide as a unit of measure stopped being used by the 13th century under the Norman kings. The Oxgang didn’t get used until the 16th - I’ll have to find out what was used for the intermediate centuries.

Because nature decided to dump it all on North (East) Texas, our ground has been really soft this fall. The weekend before Thanksgiving, I helped my sister-and-law and her husband (my brother) replace the fence. We managed to wiggle 4 of the old posts out of the ground, two of them with the concrete attached, before my dad and brother got the truck set up to pull the remaining posts.

Freezing rain starts tomorrow morning, shifting to snow then rain.
Highlight of the week is a promised high temp of 60F on Saturday, but that goes along with 100% chance of rain.

If she never wins office, but cleans up GA’s voter suppression cesspool, she has fired her shots in the Thousand Year War.

i read the lawsuit
as a layman, it was pretty powerful

paragraph 43:

In 2014, when he was running for reelection, then-Secretary Kemp purged over 250,000 people under the “use it or lose it” policy. In 2017, when he was running for governor in the upcoming 2018 Election, then-Secretary Kemp purged over 665,000 people under the “use it or lose it” policy. In a single night in July 2017, he struck over 500,000 people from the voter rolls— approximately eight percent of Georgia’s registered voters.

By contrast, in years when he was not running for office (2013, 2015, and 2016), then-Secretary Kemp removed fewer than 100 people cumulatively under the “use it or lose it” policy.

Let me emphasize first off that it rains every second of every day here in the Seattle area. Tell all your friends! But…if by some fluke it doesn’t rain for a day or two, the first time a drop of water hits people’s windshields, they go “What the Hell is that?” and slam on their brakes. Makes driving fun….

Reminds me of American property law and the “math” where every ownership interest in the property had to add up to “fee simple.” So all the leases and life estates and mineral rights and everything else had to be delineated. This got especially complicated in Texas when it came to mineral rights for descendants. It could be a real headache in (for example) selling mineral rights if you couldn’t track down all the descendants when old Great-Granddad died intestate with eight kids, 29 grandkids and scads of great-grandkids. And it’s all based on common law from the English medieval period.

Ironically, the UK modernized its property laws beginning in 1922 (called “Georgian land reform”). So their laws don’t have all the crazy of American property law.

CINCINNATI — The group behind an ongoing lawsuit against five City Council Democrats tweeted that one of them was “being hunted” by armed deputies Wednesday night and called another a “douche” for objecting to their phrasing.

By 9 p.m., the official Twitter timeline of COAST — Coalition Against Additional Spending and Taxes — was a hashtag-laden collage of retweets, GIFs and statements doubling down on the attacks.

It wasn’t quite as intense as the time COAST compared fire department budget cuts to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the attacks’ 10th anniversary, but it was vociferous and sparked an immediate reaction.

we’ve gotten to the point where hillary can neither say nor not say anything

everything gets twisted and turned and torn up into something completely different than what she said or obviously meant

Yep. I got caught in the 5:00 slowdown and kept bailing onto side routes to get around gridlock in the Merriam Park neighborhood. I slid around a bit coming down a hill near my neighborhood but luckily got it together before something bad happened. There was a squad car further down the hill. Someone had lost it, jumped the curb and got their car pinned between a bus stop bench and a retaining wall. Lots of damage to both sides of the car.
