To add insult to injury, you then tell people that a justifiable (in my view) characterization of the election as ‘stolen’ undermines confidence in the system. What exactly is the basis for confidence in the first place? Why should any Georgia voter have confidence in a system that was specifically gamed to keep voters from expressing their will?
In your writing, you provide no methodology for evaluating your claims made above. There is no means by which they can be tested. You provide no explanatory framework to allow even rudimentary common agreement on the term ‘stolen’. This effectively leaves every reader to use their own colloquial understanding and personal gauge for how some action may constitute a theft, and with which you have already informed them they are wrong. We have no basis upon which to contest your assertion because we never agreed on terminology to begin with. Essentially, as was made clear by one of your defenders on twitter, we are supposed to just acquiesce based on you academic pedigree even though you are not making an academic argument. You are offering pablum as panacea, and then revert to a self reverential appeal to authority to wave away critics.

I love the fact that the guy analyzing the debate style doesn’t actually get what Ben’s techniques actually are in many cases.
For example
1. In the pushing for specific example, Ben’s not actually pushing for specifics. He’s deliberately misrepresenting what institutional racism actually is because much of his audience is unfamiliar with it.
2. In the moving to concrete example, Ben just spouts a bunch of BS and goes warlords and 6 dollars a day. He’s not going concrete, he’s deliberately shifting the premise of the debate with a bit of handwaving BS followed up with standard, herp, herp, at least our poor aren’t as poor as the people in the 3rd world.
3. The guy narrating the video goes on at length about Ben’s research and sourcing. That’s BS. Ben pulls facts out of his ass and when challenged pulls the source out of his ass. The moon’s made out of blue cheese and white jelly beans. NASA says so.

After Espy’s loss, there was a lot of the tired takes that “blue states should stop supporting racist red states.” This really offends me as a native Southerner, especially since states like Oregon or even Maine are just a Portland away from being another Mississippi. The Washington Post suggested that Hyde-Smith’s win proved “how solidly conservative the state is.” “Conservative” is yet another euphemism. They mean “white.” Across the Bible Belt, there’s a clear racial schism in how folks vote. Is it really as reductive as “liberal” vs. “conservative”? It’s not as if every black Southerner who reliably votes Democrat spends their weekends dancing in Pride parades or sipping Chardonnay at the opera.
People like Stacey Abrams and Mike Espy will be major figures in history, while Cindy Hyde-Smith will just be a footnote. This is a battle we’re winning. It’s slow-going and sometimes torturous, yes, but we’re making progress. We’re breaking through the seemingly impenetrable wall of voter suppression and assorted vestiges of Jim Crow.

8.1 oxgang = 1 hide = about 120 acres or 1 family/year of land or 1 pound sterling in production. Humorously, to me anyway, the hide as a unit of measure stopped being used by the 13th century under the Norman kings. The Oxgang didn’t get used until the 16th - I’ll have to find out what was used for the intermediate centuries.

Reminds me of American property law and the “math” where every ownership interest in the property had to add up to “fee simple.” So all the leases and life estates and mineral rights and everything else had to be delineated. This got especially complicated in Texas when it came to mineral rights for descendants. It could be a real headache in (for example) selling mineral rights if you couldn’t track down all the descendants when old Great-Granddad died intestate with eight kids, 29 grandkids and scads of great-grandkids. And it’s all based on common law from the English medieval period.
Ironically, the UK modernized its property laws beginning in 1922 (called “Georgian land reform”). So their laws don’t have all the crazy of American property law.

Yep. I got caught in the 5:00 slowdown and kept bailing onto side routes to get around gridlock in the Merriam Park neighborhood. I slid around a bit coming down a hill near my neighborhood but luckily got it together before something bad happened. There was a squad car further down the hill. Someone had lost it, jumped the curb and got their car pinned between a bus stop bench and a retaining wall. Lots of damage to both sides of the car.
